Contrary to popular belief, people in start-ups don’t lead the glamorous life. Creating your own business is tough and tensions are flying high. There’ll be times when you realise you’ve not seen your friends in a while because you’re working relentlessly on your creation, whether it be in fear, excitement, or both! But there are ways to ease the pressure and keep your motivation and productivity flowing. Here are some easy steps to follow to avoid turning into a work robot and create some business magic:
Move your feet.
This might sound crazy, but early morning exercise is a great way to get your mind energised and eliminate all early morning sleepiness. It will boost your concentration span for the day and don’t forget, a healthy body equals a healthy mind.
Don’t blend office with bedroom.
If your bedroom is also your workplace, this can be very distracting when you’re trying to find some peace. A bedroom should be a haven to slumber and as soon as you start thinking business in there, say hello to insomnia.
Short naps, short breaks.
Short naps are advised rather than long ones. A twenty-minute snooze is the best for reviving brain function, anything longer than that is detrimental and you will feel sleepy. Equally, short breaks are critical to maintain a good brain flow, so think trips outside for fresh air, refreshing cups of tea or a chat with a colleague.
“Don’t burn out. Take care of yourself by getting 8 hours sleep, eat healthy, and exercise. If you don’t take care of yourself, there’s no way you can take care of your company in the long term” Jared Kim Founder and CEO of Forge.
Hold the caffeine.
Don’t over do the coffee – two cups a day at a maximum is more than enough. Too much coffee can make you feel nervous, restless, cause anxiety and not to mention you’ll get highly irritating headaches and dehydration. Keep a bottle of water on your desk at all times and sip slowly but often.
Make a schedule. Keep on track with the tasks that you need to do, people you need to contact and arrangements that are still pending. If you don’t press yourself, who will? You’re your own boss, remember!
A lot of people think if they work through the nights, they will see results. We urge to tell you otherwise – don’t over work! This majorly decreases productivity in the long-run; instead a balanced approach works far better.
